Mercedes-Benz raised eyebrows earlier this year by unleashing its completely OTT, made-for-oil-sheikhs G63 6x6, but, of course, there’s always scope for a little extra insanity – and this is the domain of German tuner Brabus.
The Bottrop-based tweaker rolled out arguably the most extreme vehicle at this week’s Dubai motor show, using the 400kW, six-wheeled G63 as its basis for its bonkers B63S.
Of course, the standard 5.5.-litre twin-turbo V8 simply wouldn’t do for something adorned with a Brabus badge, so they’ve ramped up power to a Lamborghini Aventador-matching 515kW, but the real kicker (literally) is a peak torque figure of 960Nm, on tap from 2000 to 4500rpm.
The extra oomph is largely the result of new high-performance catalysts and a pair of Brabus-spec turbochargers that raise the boost pressure. The titanic torque is channelled to all six wheels by a seven-speed automatic transmission.
There’s also a stainless steel, side-exit sports exhaust system with butterfly valves that provide ‘Coming home’ and ‘Sport’ modes, so you can be a hooligan when the occasion calls for it, yet not have your house set on fire by the neighbours.
Further peace of mind comes from a three-year/100,000km warranty, which you’d pretty much expect, given the $860k price tag (in the UAE).
Despite its earth-rotating grunt, the B63S still needs 7.4sec to hit 100km/h from standstill, and that’s because it tips the scales at close to four tonnes. What’s more, top speed is limited to 160km/h on account of the massive off-road tyres.
There was really no need to tamper with the rest of the drivetrain, as the standard Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 already comes equipped with a low-range gearbox, five differential locks and a tyre pressure control system that can adjust the 37-inch tyres, so the B63S is fit to tame gargantuan sand dunes straight out of the box.
Whether you’d actually want to take it off the beaten track is another matter, as the fettled all-terrainer’s gloss-black paint, polished underbody protection and carbonfibre wheelarches would mark up in double-quick time.
The pimping treatment extends to the interior, which is swathed in red leather upholstery, alcantara roof lining and kitted out with TV screens in the rear headrests.
Yes, it’s completely pointless, but this (Dubai-based) motoring.com.au correspondent still couldn’t help gawking at the monstrous Brabus in dumbfounded fascination.
