Celebrities give Mazda6 thumbs up

Most are accustomed to top-end luxury and sports cars, but many of the stars who took part in the 2013 Mazda6 Celebrity Race walked away impressed with the new Mazda6.

All of the 21 celebrity drivers raced Mazda6 sedans powered by 2.2-litre turbo-diesels producing 129kW/420Nm, with the only major modifications being the fitment of roll cages and racing seats.

Finishing third overall after three races, actor Jonathan LaPaglia told motoring.com.au he was "really impressed" with the Mazda6.

"They have an incredible amount of grip around corners," said the actor, who usually drives a 1973 Dodge Challenger.

"They’re designed to commute and be fuel-efficient and carry the whole family, but we're not gentle on them. We're flogging them!"

Former Australian test cricketer and overall winner Brad Hodge agreed with LaPaglia, saying the Mazda6 had good handling and was a "very impressive machine". Hodge, whose regular car is a 311kW V8-powered Lexus IS F, called the Mazda6 a "well-rounded” car.

"It’s a good package, real good quality. I think they look good, the car shows up well and the handling's been good."

International supermodel and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition regular Jessica Gomes was surprised by the turbo-diesel's acceleration, explaining that she is a bit of a closet Mazda fan.

"I always drive Mazdas, but dude I was surprised with how fast these go. Woah, its nuts, it's really fun."

Gomes had a strong run in the second race after qualifying in last (21st) place, finishing 11th, and some drivers were hitting speeds of more than 170km/h at the end of the Albert Park street circuit's main straight.

Olympic cycling gold medallist Anna Meares finished fourth in two of the three races said she said she was "devo" about missing the podium.

"I'm surprised how much go it's got because I always thought diesels were quite sluggish. It's really comfortable to drive and I'm surprised at its handling for a front-wheel drive."

Meares, who previously owned a Toyota Corolla was one of the few drivers who kept her Mazda6 out of trouble, as did actor and singer Holly Candy (formerly Holly Valance).

"They're really good cars -- they've got a lot of spunk," said Candy. "They feel sporty and sound sporty, but you can fit all your mates in," said the former Neighbours star, who now drives a Porsche 911 Turbo.

The Celebrity Race has been a regular support series at Australian F1 Grands Prix since 1985 -- with the exception of a few GFC-affected years -- featuring everything from MINIs and Fiat 500s to Holden Calibras.

The event is a fan favourite because of the thrills and spills, and 2013 didn't disappoint with no less than six cars left undriveable due to damage, and almost every car incurring minor damage.
