Mercedes-Benz has released a teaser video of its first ever one-tonne pick-up truck, which is now confirmed to make its world debut in concept form at a special event in Sweden next Tuesday (October 25).
Confirming the new pick-up's unveiling, which motoring.com.au will attend, the car-maker also invited its fans to watch a live stream of the event on its official YouTube channel.
A placeholder image on the channel also previews the outline of Benz's as-yet-unnamed rival for the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok, along with the words:
"As the first premium manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz is making an entry into the promising segment of mid-size pickups. With the concept of the Mercedes-Benz Pickup, Mercedes-Benz will give an outlook on the design and explain their global product strategy in detail.
"The concept of the Mercedes-Benz Pickup will be unveiled at the art gallery Artipelag in Stockholm, Sweden on October 25 at 6.30 p.m. CEST (4.30 p.m. GMT)."
In Australia, that's 3:30am on Wednesday, October 26.
"Hosts of the event will be Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG."
Already spotted testing, camouflaged prototypes of the ute appear to suggest that, while its sheetmetal and interior will be unique, the new German pick-up won’t have radically different styling compared with the Nissan NP300 Navara on which it’s based.
Expected to be called the GLT-Class, it's thought the biggest changes occur under the skin.
The GLT is set to come with completely rethought suspension. Base models are likely to share the Navara's 120kW/403Nm 2.3-litre diesel, but higher-spec Mercedes utes will come with a significantly more powerful 3.0-litre V6 diesel that’s currently available in the Sprinter van.
Later on an AMG version might also be developed for the GLT.
If green-lit by the car-maker, the performance version of the four-wheel drive dual-cab pick-up is most likely to gain the AMG C 43’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol that pushes out 270kW/520Nm.
As well as more power, Mercedes-Benz's commercial division has already boasted its GLT will be the "world's safest ute". This means expect the GLT to come with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, cross traffic warning and more airbags than any of its rivals.
To ensure it will cope with the toughest environments known to man, the car-maker has confirmed it will be tested Down Under. Our utes will also come with a special suspension tune calibrated to our 'unique' roads.
The reason Mercedes based its new pick-up on the Nissan Navara, rather than start from scratch, was to fast-track a one-tonne to the market.
The new GLT will be built at the Renault-Nissan Alliance Spanish factory alongside the Navara built for Europe and the forthcoming Renault Alaskan.
