FCA reveals Abarth 124 Spider specs for Oz

Mazda-based sports car will ride on Bilstein dampers and hit 100km/h in 6.8 seconds

Fiat Chrysler has today announced further details for the Abarth 124 Spider, which is due to launch locally next month.

As we reported in June, the Abarth Spider for Australia will be powered by a 1.4-litre MultiAir engine rated at 125kW and 250Nm. Given the sports car's weight of just 1060kg, that engine output results in a power-to-weight-ratio of 6.2kg/HP, which FCA claims is best in class – and that includes for the donor car, the Mazda MX-5. With that going for it, the 124 Spider will reach 100km/h from a standing start in 6.8 seconds.

Buyers can order the Abarth 124 Spider with either manual or automatic transmission – both six-speed units. The automatic comes with shift paddles. A sport mode setting recalibrates engine, automatic transmission, electric power steering and dynamic stability control system to a sportier mode, on the fly.

In addition to the car's 50:50 weight distribution, sports suspension and limited-slip differential at the rear of the car, the Abarth 124 Spider will be fitted as standard with four-piston Brembo brakes and Bilstein dampers.

Cosmetic details include Gun Metal finish for exterior trim and the 17-inch alloy wheels, plus chrome quad-tip sports exhaust system. A dual-mode 'Monza' exhaust is to be offered as an option. And the 124 Spider's sports seats are trimmed in a leather/Alcantara combination.

The Abarth 124 Spider is scheduled to go on sale locally from October 7.
