GLA to start below $48K

Mercedes-Benz has announced local pricing for new, small SUV
The three-pointed star is entering a new market niche with guns ablaze.
Pricing its new GLA range well below $50,000 – and offering a diesel as the entry-level variant – Benz is leaving no doubt that it plans to stake a share of the small luxury SUV segment with its A-Class derivative.
“Our new GLA-Class reinterprets the compact SUV segment. Continuing the success of our range in the compact class, the GLA broadens our offering to a youthful, more dynamic target market,” said Horst Von Sanden, MD of Mercedes-Benz Australia.
“Its expressive design, practicality and versatility, and superb performance will ensure that the GLA-Class is highly desired in our local market.”
The new model range comprises three variants, the GLA 200 CDI opening the batting at $47,900 with a 100kW/300Nm four-cylinder turbo-diesel, displacing 2.2 litres. Fuel consumption, in combined-cycle testing, is 4.6L/100km. For that price, however, don't expect to take the GLA off-road. The diesel model is front-wheel drive only.
For Benz's new 4MATIC four-wheel drive system in a GLA, you'll have to pony up $57,900. That's the price for the GLA 250 4MATIC, which is powered by a direct-injected 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, developing 155kW and 350Nm. Fuel consumption is 7.0L/100km in official testing.
Leading the range is the GLA 45 AMG, powered by the same turbo-petrol engine at the heart of the A 45 and CLA 45 AMG models. Output is 265kW and 450Nm from this 2.0-litre donk – enough to push the GLA 45 AMG up to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds.
Standard equipment for the 200 CDI comprises 18-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, Active Parking Assist and a reversing camera. The GLA 250 4MATIC adds to that specification heated/electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, intelligent light system, 19-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.
As the hot-shoe model in the range, priced at $79,900, the GLA 45 AMG moves to 20-inch alloys, sports suspension, AMG Night Package, high-performance braking, COMAND satellite navigation and a Harmon Kardon Logic 7 surround sound audio system.
Safety features across the range include Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Pre-Safe, Attention Assist and Active Bonnet. Additionally, the GLA 45 AMG also scores Distronic Plus and Lane Keeping Assist as standard.
Mercedes-Benz Australia advises the GLA will go on sale here next month.
