Holy G-Class

'Popemobile' developed for communing with nature -- and massed crowds

Mercedes-Benz has developed a new open-top version of the company's G 500 model for the transportation of Pope Benedict XVI.

Named the 'Popemobile', the vehicle has been designed for the Pope's use in fine weather as he meets the 40,000 visitors to St. Peter's Square each Wednesday.

Two years in the making, the Pope's new vehicle is finished entirely in white -- inside and out -- with a folding windscreen and handrails with access via red-lined steps at the rear of the vehicle.

This vehicle is the latest Mercedes to join the Vatican fleet, which also includes armoured M-Class and S-Class models.
