Honda reinvents the airbag
Breakthrough in passenger safety sees Japanese car-maker create head airbag shaped like a baseball mittHonda claims it has made a major breakthrough in protecting front passengers in a crash with the creation of a new airbag design that that cradles the head following an impact.
Created by Honda's US R&D centre in Ohio, the new passenger airbag has been designed to better deal with angled frontal impacts.
Featuring three inflatable compartments instead of a single bag, the new Honda airbag helps minimise the lateral forces applied to an occupant's head.
Appropriately modelled on a baseball catcher's mitt, the US-designed airbag employs a central panel and two side panels.
The design works to 'catch' the passenger's head, with the two side panels cradling it inwards to prevent harm.
This, says the engineers behind it, reduces the potentially lethal head rotation that occurs in some impacts and prevents the head sliding off the airbag altogether.
Following testing, the new airbag will be introduced into Honda products in the US as early as next year, but it's not yet known if or when Australians will have access to the pioneering new airbag.
