Honda has today staged the world debut of an all-new small SUV to slot beneath its HR-V at the 2016 Sao Paulo International Motor Show in Brazil.
Dubbed the WR-V, the "planned production model" is understood to be based on the Japanese car-maker's smallest model, the Jazz, and was conceived by Honda R&D Brazil following South American research that identified local demand for a vehicle incorporating "tough and urban SUV design as well as excellent utility and a spacious cabin within a compact body size".
Production in Brazil has been confirmed for the first half of 2017, with sales to commence across South America soon after, but the WR-V won't be sold in Australia, where Honda's smallest SUV will continue to be the HR-V, which will be joined in the second half of next year by a new-generation CR-V.
No hard data has been provided for the WR-V, which stands for 'Winsome Runabout Vehicle', except for Honda's claim that it will bring "outstanding fuel economy and stable handling performance, which accommodates various needs in the daily lives and recreational activities of customers who enjoy active lifestyles".
“Ever since we began business in Brazil in 1971, Honda has been supported by a total of 24 million customers in Brazil through their purchase of our motorcycles, automobiles and power products," said Honda president Takahiro Hachigo in a statement today.
In the same press release, Honda Automoveis do Brazil Ltda chief Issao Mizoguchi said the WR-V is testament to Honda’s commitment to the South American market.
“Including the establishment of a new automobile R&D Centre in Brazil which became operational in 2013, Honda has been strengthening its product development to accommodate the needs of customers in this region.
"This WR-V is one of the major achievements resulting from such efforts. With the introduction of this new SUV, in addition to the CR-V and HR-V, we will further strengthen the presence of Honda in the South American region.”
