Honda tightens CO2 reduction targets

Reduction program aims to achieve a 30 per cent fall on year 2000 carbon dioxide levels by the end of 2020

Honda has announced the next step in its global CO2 emission reduction program, cutting overall emissions to 30 per cent of 2000 levels by the end of 2020

The new target figure will see the company tightening up not just through its production plants and its supply chain, but through all its corporate activities. This, it has said in its statement, extends to 'total energy management'.

The company has implemented self-imposed environmental improvement plans with increasing rigour for much of the last decade. From 2006, it set about slicing 10 per cent off 2000-level global C02 emissions across its product lineup by the end of 2010, which it achieved.

Honda has long placed fuel efficiency and cleanliness among its key selling points for its cars, bikes and other powered products like mowers.

Of the US Environmental Protection Agency's top ten most fuel-efficient cars from 1984 to 2010 are Hondas: 2000-06 Insight (4.4 L/100km combined); 1986-87 Civic Coupe (5.1 L/100km), 1994-95 Civic hatch (5.5 L/100km), 2006-present Civic Hybrid (5.6 L/100 km) and 2010-present second-gen Insight (5.7 L/100 km).

The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy has also rated the Civic GX as America's greenest car for seven years running.

In Australia, the Green Vehicle Guide rates the current Insight sixth (pictured) and the Jazz city car 13th on its list of the country's top 20 environmental performers.
