Honda toys with charging on the fly

New patent proves Japanese car-maker is considering futuristic wireless induction charging on the move

Honda has submitted new patents that prove it is exploring better ways to charge pure-electric vehicles, including one proposal that alloqa its cars to be charged on the move.

According to the drawings submitted to the US Patents and Trademark Office, in the future while cruising on the highway the driver will be able to charge their vehicle by extending a charging arm while on the move.

This charging arm is then brought into contact with an electrode hanging from an overhead powerline, allowing charging on the move.

From the drawings it appears the electrode could also consist of a charging rail running alongside the highway.

It's thought that future autonomous driving technology will offer the driving precision needed for the 'docking' process that could take place at speeds well over 100km/h.

Honda's charging rail, it's claimed, would be far cheaper than other wireless-charging on the move infrastructure that usually involves embedding induction coils into a road's surface -- a process that's both costly and slow to roll out.
