Toyota has no news on the price of its new Supra. Nor is it talking definitively about the model line-up, or engine and gearbox choices, save to say multiple variations are “under study”.
The platform under the new Supra was co-developed with BMW. First engineering prototype drives of the new two-seater took place this week in Spain.
But Toyota remains tight-lipped on details of engine options aside from the 3.0-litre inline six already displayed.
It is also not commenting on whether or when manual gearbox variants will be launched, nor the status of key performance options such as adaptive suspension and active rear differential.
Toyota Australia spokespersons confirmed no pricing or specifications have been firmed up for local consumption.
The A90 Toyota Super coupe is expected to debut internationally at January’s Detroit motor show. Toyota Australia has confirmed its local release in the third quarter of 2019.
Toyota says the new Supra was benchmarked against German opposition such as the BMW M2 and Porsche Cayman S and GTS.
Interestingly for Australian buyers, Toyota Motor Europe product communications spokesperson, Vincent Dewaersegger, also stated the company had looked closely at Ford Mustang’s success in Europe – which chiefly has centred on the 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder model.
Potential bandwidth is not something the new Supra is lacking, however. The Assistant Chief Engineer of the new A90 Toyota Supra project, Masayuki Kai, confirmed at this week’s engineering preview of the new vehicle that a four-cylinder variant of the new Supra is definitely under consideration.
He also confirmed that the development work had also been completed for a manual transmission version – at least coupled to the inline six-cylinder engine.
Higher performance versions are also possible, Kai stated, although this would be via high-performance sixes as he ruled out the potential of a V8 version.
Kai and Dewaersegger both suggested the highest performance version of Supra would likely wear a GRMN designation. GR stands for GAZOO Racing, Toyota’s new global performance division with MN signifying “Meister Nurburgring”.
On the vexed issue of pricing, Dewaersegger said plainly: “Pricing is not finalised… Of course, it will be below Porsche [Cayman], but the final pricing is depending on each competitive market.
“Of course, [Supra is] not a cheap car but we still want to make it affordable… Our target is not to make it so high that nobody’s going to buy it… The sweet spot we are still defining,” he stated.
