Ever fantasized about what car you’d buy if you won the lottery? A brand new red Ferrari, or perhaps a ‘bahn-storming Bentley for a bit more comfort? Or if you really won big, maybe a super-exclusive, low volume supercar like Lamborghini’s Sesto Elemento or Aston Martin’s One-77. Well, if you did hit the jackpot and splashed out on something rare and Italian, it appears you’d be in the minority, judging by the results of a survey on the spending habits of those who have won at least a million pounds, or around $1.55 million, in The National Lottery in the UK.
According to data collected by Oxford Economics from the 3000 Lottery millionaires since 1994, the most popular new car brand is, wait for it... Audi. The German cars were bought by 16 per cent of the lucky Lottery winners. Next most popular choice was Range Rover (11 per cent) and BMW (11 per cent), followed by Mercedes-Benz (10 per cent), and Land Rover (5 per cent).
In total, the 3000 millionaires spent £463 million ($718m) on purchasing 17,190 new cars, which equates to an average of five and three quarter cars per millionaire. The average price of the winners’ favourite cars bought since striking it rich was £46,116 ($71,613), which at least in Australia would get you a nice, mid-spec A4 sedan.
In case you were wondering, the winners collected on average £2.8 million ($3.38m) each, so it’s possible a few blew a big chunk on something more exciting like Audi’s top-spec R8 supercar or ‘Benz’s SLS blaster, which cost around half a million dollars apiece Down Under.
However, it seems most spent the majority of their loot on more sensible investments like property. They also gave away £1.37 billion ($2.13 billion), or around eight per cent of their loot, as gifts to friends and family.
Other interesting results from the survey: only 59 per cent gave up work, while 82 per cent changed their main residence; spending an average £900,000 ($1.4m) on their new abode. The favourite overseas country to visit was the USA, staying in five-star hotels, of course. One in 10 winners also splashed out on a new caravan.
