Leaked: All-new Volvo V90 wagon

Replacement for the ancient V70 wagon spotted ahead of Geneva motor show unveiling

A Swedish car blog, Teknikens Varld, has published pictures of the all-new Volvo V90 months ahead of its official launch at the Geneva motor show this March 2016.

The pictures, that were posted over the weekend, appear to have caught the wagon completely undisguised in a top secret facility thought to be owned by Volvo.

From the images we can see that the V90 will be a far more stylish replacement for the current V70, but despite its rakish rear pillars could still offer substantially more luggage space than the old car.

That’s because, like the S90 sedan with which it shares its looks and underpinnings, the V90 and is built on the new longer, wider Scaled Platform Architecture (SPA) that made its debut under the XC90.

Like the big S90 that’s due to be unveiled at the Detroit motor show next week, the wagon will come with a range of 2.0-litre diesel and turbocharged petrol engines and be spearheaded by a 300kW T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Later on from its launch, an efficient tiny turbocharged 1.5-litre hybrid petrol will also be rolled out.

Volvo has already released a video that teases the S90’s interior – the same cabin design the V90 wagon is almost certain to share.

Picking up from the big XC90 SUV, the S90’s interior majors in a clean, uncluttered Scandinavian design that features a huge portrait-mounted infotainment system.

Said to harness cloud-based apps and services, the new system is said to be the firm’s most advanced yet.

Another first for its class, which includes the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes E-Class, is new semi-autonomous tech that includes Pilot Assist – a cruise control – that delivers gentle steering inputs to keep within its lane markings on a highway up to speeds of 130km/h.

Other new tech, described as being a world first, is a new feature added to City Safety that detects large animals such as elk, horses or moose at night or during the daytime. If detected the emergency braking will bring the car to a halt safely.

More information on both the S90 and V90 wagon is expected following the big sedan’s official unveiling at the Detroit motor show, 11 January.
