Mazda Australia releases 100th Anniversary models

Just 700 units will be released to commemorate Mazda’s century in business

Mazda Australia has confirmed details of 700 new limited-edition models designed to commemorate its 100 years in business -- 60 of those as a car-maker in Australia.

This week, the Japanese marque confirmed the 100th Anniversary Special Edition vehicles would be based on existing high-grade models, each drawing inspiration from Mazda’s first passenger car, the R360 Coupe.

“Developed in 1960, the R360 Coupe was responsible for launching the humble Hiroshima-based former cork manufacturers into the automotive world, setting a benchmark in reliability and a commitment to driving that lives on to this day,” Mazda said in a release.

“While the R360 never officially made it to Australia, it was the willing participant in a gruelling 1962 reliability test run, covering the 1500km round trip from Perth to Esperance on a variety of unsealed country roads and outback scenery, taking it all in its stride.”

Employing a similar two-tone red and white theme as the high-grade R360 Coupe, the special-edition vehicles will be finished in a Snowflake White Peart Mica hue contrasted with Burgundy leather on the seats and 100th Anniversary badging embossed on the head restraints.

Similar badging also appears on the front fender, key fob, hub caps and burgundy floor mats.

The special-edition models will ccommand a circa-$3000 price premium over their donor vehicles and will be available across Mazda’s entire range save the BT-50 ute.

“We’re grateful to have a loyal and passionate customer base in Australia and to say thank you, we’ll be offering those that register their interest the first opportunity to secure their vehicle order,” said Mazda sales director Jarrod Gieschen.

Customers can register their interest via a special page at the Mazda Australia website.
