MB announces pricing, timing for CLC

Mercedes-Benz will launch the new CLC in August and the entry-level model will scrape in below $50,000

A new CLC model joins the W204 series C-Class at the 'budget' end of the local Mercedes-Benz range from August.

Unlike the sedan, the CLC is not built on a new platform, Mercedes-Benz merely facelifting the 203 series CL Sports Coupe to emulate the styling of the 204 series sedan.

Starting price for the new CLC 200 Kompressor is $49,900. $4000 extra buys a higher-spec variant, the CLC 200 Kompressor Evolution ($53,900), and a further $5000 ($58,900) hits the mark for the flagship model, the CLC 200 Kompressor Evolution +.

As standard, the CLC 200 Kompressor features: ABS, Brake Assist, ESP, dual front airbags, side-impact (thorax) airbags for front and rear-seat occupants, 'windowbags' to protect the heads of front and rear occupants, parking sensors, seatbelt pre-tensioners and tyre pressure loss waning system.

Over this specification, the CLC 200 Kompressor Evolution boasts 'Direct Steer' speed-sensitive power steering, bi-xenon headlights with cornering function and headlight cleaning, 17-inch alloy wheels, sequential-shift gear paddles (with automatic transmission), 'Artico' man-made leather upholstery, dark-brushed aluminium-look trim highlights, aluminium-faced pedals, unique sports instrumentation cluster, black roof lining in fabric, black velour mats with silver-coloured edging, mesh inserts for engine cooling intakes and grille louvers finished in chrome and black combination.

In addition to these features, the CLC 200 Kompressor Evolution + is fitted with a glass panoramic tilt/slide sunroof, multi-zone climate control, electric front seats with memory linked to the electrically adjustable steering column, illuminated vanity mirrors and black birds-eye maple wood trim.

Facelifted though it is, the CLC introduces 1100 newly developed parts. At least some of those parts doubtless contribute to the new car's improved handling.

Mercedes-Benz claims that 70 per cent of buyers for the 203 series Sports Coupe had never purchased a Mercedes-Benz before. 43 per cent of buyers went on to purchase a larger model of Mercedes-Benz after the initial Sports Coupe purchase. So the new model is a very important addition to the company's local product range, in the sphere of retail business.
