Mercedes-AMG teases its upcoming electric super-SUV

Standalone EV super-SUV will hunt BMW XMs and ride on a purpose-built AMG platform

Mercedes-AMG has released the first image of its upcoming electric super-SUV destined to duke it out with the Lotus Eletre, next-gen Porsche Cayenne EV and petrol-electric BMW XM.

Still without a name for the time being, the standalone model will be the second Merc product underpinned by the German performance division’s dedicated ‘AMG.EA’ architecture, intended only for the brand’s fastest EVs, behind the second-gen Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door.

That explains why the silhouette looks closer in shape to the Ferrari Purosangue than the existing EQS SUV, with the design set to draw influence from the 2022 Vision AMG concept, despite the latter being a low-slung sedan.

Rumour has it the AMG-specific platform has been developed to accommodate advanced Axial Flux disc-shaped e-motors, following AMG’s snap-up of British engineering firm Yasa.

Weighing just 24kg, the Yasa e-motor produces up to 358kW and 800Nm of torque – the super-SUV and fast four-door coupe are each set to have four motors, forecasting a combined power output in excess of 750kW.

Other advanced tech includes 800-volt electronics and a battery pack developed by AMG featuring a silicon anode.

Set to be positioned above the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63, that currently sells for $272,300, it’s thought instead of offering outright track performance, the flagship AMG SUV will major in luxury, however advanced sports suspension, next-gen chassis tech and four-wheel steering should ensure it’s among the best SUVs to drive.
