Mercedes-Benz dealers to start promoting superbikes

Mercedes-AMG purchase of MV Agusta will see car-maker’s dealer network branch out into motorcycles -- including in Australia

Italian superbike-maker, MV Agusta, will soon be promoted throughout Mercedes-Benz dealerships -- including in Australia -- following the German car-maker’s purchase of a significant 25 per cent stake in the motorcycle manufacturer.

Mercedes-AMG bought a share in MV Agusta late in 2014 and have since collaborated on a high-performance F3 800 AMG concept that was unveiled last year at the Frankfurt motor show.

The move into motorcycles by the German car-maker mirrors Audi’s recent purchase of Ducati, but the decision to promote motorcycles through 127 selected Mercedes dealerships across Europe is expected to give MV Agusta a significant boost in volume and profits.

Making the announcement at the launch of the production version of the F3 800, MV Agusta president Giovanni Castiglioni said the move would “solidify their bond”.

Australian Mercedes-Benz spokesman David McCarthy confirmed local dealerships would also promote -- but not sell -- MV Agusta bikes.

"The same thing will happen here," he said. "MV Agusta motorcycles will be displayed in AMG Performance Centres. Customers will be able to view and receive information on them, but to purchase them they will have to go to an MV Agusta dealership."
