Mercedes-Benz' gold class @ Cannes
The cars that ate Cannes were German and French, some were gold and others were curious electric mobility devicesRenault may have been the official partner of the Cannes Film Festival for 29 years running, but it was Mercedes-Benz that stole the automotive lime-light at the prestigious film festival with gold class.
The gleaming gold Mercedes-Benz shuttle vehicles included a stretched S-Class limousine and were finished in gold to celebrate the awarding of the 65th Palme d'Or or Gold Palm, a prize given to the director of the best film at the French festival.
As well as transporting VIP guests to and from screenings and soirees, the German automaker was also offering "exclusive test drives to guests and visitors" in its vehicles, which included AMG models.
Mercedes-Benz may have upstaged Renault with its gilt fleet, but the French company was a more prominent presence due to the sheer numbers of vehicles it supplied to the event, numbering more than 250.
The French Riviera saw more than 100 Renault Latitude vehicles escorting the "elite of international film to the red carpet".
Though the French car maker cannot boast gold vehicles, it did have a number of zero emission electric vehicles on hand which are always popular with high-brow celebrities who flock to Cannes like moths to the flame. Both the Fluence Z.E. and unusually designed Twizy were on hand to keep emissions low.
Renault also showed off a special edition Twizy electric vehicle on the Plage Orange beach, which features the autographs of some of the A-list movie stars who attended the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
