Mercedes-Benz in HY times

Dubbed the F 600 HY, it is powered by an innovative fuel cell drive that puts out 85kW and 350Nm, yet runs -- figuratively -- on the smell of an oily rag. Mercedes claims the research vehicles consumes the equivalent of just 2.9 litres of fuel per 100km, and has an operating range in excess of 400 kilometres.

Hydrogen fuel cells are being touted as the powertrain that will propel all future vehicles. How do they work? In a nutshell, they use the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to generate electrical power. The best part? They produce no harmful emissions.

In the F 600 HY's case, the fuel cell can also serve as a mobile power source -- Mercedes says the 66kW it generates would be sufficient to keep several detached houses supplied with power.

But there's more... for example, the cup holders also use electrical power from the fuel cell to keep drinks chilled or hot.

In addition to the fuel-cell technology, the baby Benz also showcases cutting-edge virtual displays, new-style seats and other pioneering technologies designed to enhance safety and passenger comfort.

Although it measures just 4348mm long, the F 600 is said to provide interior space on par with significantly larger sedans. Added flexibility is provided by being able to swivel the front passenger seat and individual rear seats through 180 degrees.

The backrests can be swung forwards and reversed in such a way that ISOFIX child seats can be locked into place on the seat cushions in a rearwards-facing position.

Other high-tech features include reversing cameras, a command system similar to BMW's iDrive, virtual displays, LED lights and PRE-SAFE occupant protection that prepares the cabin for an impending collision.
