Mercedes-Benz updates A-Class

Revised A-Class on sale from January with more power and tech, higher list price

Mercedes-Benz has detailed changes to its A-Class this week, the model due to go on sale locally from January (2016).

Chief among the changes are additional technology levels, improved performance and a mildly revised look. The changes apply to all models in the A-Class line-up, including the flagship A 45 4MATIC. Pricing for the A-Class range begins from $37,200 (plus on-road costs), an increase of $1300 over the outgoing model.

For the entry-grade A 180 the changes see a revised, body-coloured fascia, new-look 17-inch alloy wheels and added as standard.

As is the case with all A-Class variants, the A 180 also receives Apple CarPlay, an 8.0-inch infotainment display, Garmin MAP PILOT sat-nav, blind-spot monitoring, reversing camera, keyless ignition, DYNAMIC SELECT, and new front seats with improved thigh support join the range.

The A 180 retains its 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 90kW and 200Nm. The model is matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard, and is said to consume 5.8L/100km on the ADR Combined cycle.

Stepping up to the A 200 (petrol) we find 18-inch wheels and the new-look fascia, this time with a silver detail treatment in lieu of the body-coloured style of the A 180. The rear is identified by dual outlet exhausts. On top of the added equipment listed for the A 180, A 200 models also include a Mirror Package as standard and sports seats with lumbar support.

The A 200 is now priced from $42,800 (plus ORCs), an increase of $1000 over the outgoing model. Like the A 180 the A 200 is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, this time producing 115kW and 250Nm. Also mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission the A 200 uses 6.1L/100km, unchanged from the outgoing model.

The A 200 d (diesel) receives the same equipment as its petrol sibling and likewise faces a price increase of $1000. The updated model now retails for $43,300 (plus ORCs). It is powered by a 2.1-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine making 100kW and 300Nm, and is also married to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Fuel consumption is listed at 4.0L/100km (Combined, unchanged).

For the best-seller of the range, the A 250 Sport 4MATIC, power increases 5kW (now 160kW/350Nm) – and the price jumps $2300, the model now selling from $53,300 (plus ORCs). The increase in performance for the A 250 Sport 4MATIC also sees a slight increase in fuel consumption, jumping 0.1L to 6.7L/100km.

The model is the first in the line-up to include all-wheel drive as standard (both the A 180 and A200 are front-wheel driven) and includes AMG 18-inch alloys, body styling and Ride Control suspension, fixed LED headlights, KEYLESS-GO, a panoramic sunroof and a 12-colour interior ambient lighting system.

Mercedes-AMG's flagship A 45 4MATIC also scores a number of equipment updates, as well as an uptick in performance, and price.

The A 45 4MATIC adds 15kW and 25Nm to its turbocharged 2.0-litre arsenal, taking the total to 280kw and 475Nm. The change sees the 0-100km/h sprint fall to 4.2sec (-0.4sec). Fuel consumption rises from 6.9 to 7.3L/100km.

New A 45 DYNAMIC SELECT mode will include Race Mode

Mercedes tells us that the A 45 4MATIC receives revised gear ratios for its seven-speed SPEEDSHIFT DCT, as well as "aerodynamic fine-tuning", new AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes (including new Race Mode), AMG DYNAMIC PLUS (including an optional mechanical front locking differential), revised AMG 19-inch wheels, AMG Performance seats, AMG Performance exhaust, COMAND navigation system, Harmon Kardon audio, DISTRONIC PLUS and heated front seats.

"The progressive new A-Class continues the success story of our compact car range" said Mercedes-Benz Cars Australia CEO and managing director, Horst von Sanden.

"Since 2013, the A-Class model range has enhanced the youthful appeal of our brand, and been one of the real highlights in our product offensive. This latest generation delivers even greater comfort and value to our customers."
