MG Motor has released a new video detailing its upcoming all-electric MG Cyberster roadster ahead of its official launch in 2024.
Created to celebrate the Chinese-owned brand’s 100th birthday (as Morris Garages in 1924) and confirmed for right-hand drive markets including Australia, the MG Cyberster could be unveiled potentially as soon as later this year.
It's thought the latest video previews the striking battery-powered sports car in near-production form, following its original unveiling as a concept car at the 2021 Shanghai motor show.
It shows how the original concept has evolved, although some of the show car's wilder design feature remain, including the scissor doors, Tesla-style steering yoke, aggressive alloy wheel design and British Union Flag-inspired arrow-shaped tail-lights.
We also get to see the traditional fabric roof folding away.
Despite its long bonnet, it's thought the Cyberster will get a powerful four-motor all-electric powertrain that will deliver a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than three seconds.
A large battery, meanwhile, is expected to provide for a long range of more than 800km.
There's still no indication of exactly where MG Motor will position the Cyberster in the market, but the safe money is it will square up to conventional combustion-powered sports coupes like the Toyota Supra and Nissan Z, with a sub-$80,000 starting price from launch.
However, cheaper rear-drive versions could be introduced later on, potentially dropping prices to less than $60,000 and making the MG Cyberster more of a zero-emission alternative to models like the Mazda MX-5 and Ford Mustang – and a legitimate spiritual successor for the MG TF produced between 1995 and 2011.
