MG is gearing up for its biggest year in Australia yet, with the Chinese carmaker readying the launch of more than eight new models, including a host of EVs, more hybrids, a mid-sized sports sedan and some more premium offerings.
A dual-cab ute won’t be one of them however, that will come later as MG look to climb the sales charts and become a top-three brand by 2030.
Instead, the fast-rising marque will broaden its passenger car offering, with MG Australia chief executive Peter Ciao setting his sights on every major vehicle segment.
“Every major segment, we will cover… full-size SUV, ute, everything,” Ciao told media at the local launch of the new MG ZS Hybrid.
“And then, each segment, we won’t just have the product, we need to provide the best offer. Best offer includes best price and good enough technology.”
Neither Ciao nor any of his subordinates would reveal the full list of models headed our way in 2025, however a few key models have been confirmed and look set to make a splash in their respective segments.
“I think 2025 will be our biggest year ever; the record year for MG since it launched in Australia,” local head of product Akshat Ahuja told carsales.
“We’re looking at a fully-electric compact SUV and then it will also have a bigger brother mid-size electric SUV in Q3.
“There will be a seven-seater (5+2) large SUV, plus we are also looking at a very sporty sedan.”
Logic would suggest the compact electric SUV will be a second-generation ZS EV – known as the ES5 in China – while the electric mid-sizer will likely be the Marvel R.
The sports sedan meantime will come in the form of the MG7 fastback and serve primarily as a cut-price rival for the Hyundai Sonata N-Line, however there’ll probably be some overlap with the new-generation Toyota Camry and aging Mazda6 as well.
Ahuja added that the sports sedan would be better than the Camry with a heap more attitude and performance.
“It’s a different product, it’s more performance-oriented, very powerful, the looks, the design; it will be a unique product that stands on its own,” he said.
“We are also looking to have some premium, fully electric cars on the market next year, and there is something else I just cannot talk about at all.”
The electric luxury models are thought to be sourced from parent company SAIC’s premium marque IM Motors, with MG previously detailing the Tesla Model Y-rivalling IM LS6 SUV for Oz, along with the L7 sedan.
Meanwhile, a sportier version of the HS mid-size SUV is also said to be on the cards to complement the existing turbo-petrol variants as well as the inbound hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.
An updated MG3 featuring “software and structural” changes is also in the fray to try and improve the light hatch’s sub-par three-star ANCAP safety rating.
A people mover is also on the cards but isn’t one of the eight-plus models due next year.
