MG is obviously a brand with many past glories, but in recent years – especially after being taken over by China's SAIC – it's been content to churn out eminently mundane offerings catering to the mass market.
However, here's a sign the storied marque is looking to rekindle its sporting heritage, although the bewinged red beast you see here is for now just a concept. That said, it appears to have all the makings to be the basis for a one-make race series.
Dubbed the MG3 Trophy Championship concept, it's based on the cheap and cheerful MG3 hatchback that launched last September, priced in the UK from the equivalent of $15k.
Unleashed at last weekend's MG90 event (which celebrated the marque's 90th year anniversary) at Silverstone circuit last weekend, the racy concept is a far cry from the pedestrian road car from which it's derived.
In standard form the MG3's 1.5-litre engine ekes out a weedy 78kW and 136Nm, but the track-ready version pumps out a far more impressive 152kW and 260Nm, thanks primarily to the addition of a turbocharger.
The racing concept was created by a team of engineers, managed by Vehicle Engineering Specialist Adrian Guyll, and based at SAIC Motor's European Design and Technical Centre (SMTC), near MG's Longbridge site.
Guyll and his boffins got to work by stripping weight from the bodyshell and then adding a limited-slip differential, a fully adjustable Macpherson strut front set-up with bespoke rear anti-roll bar, adjustable front splitter and twin-plain adjustable rear spoiler.
The concept got plenty of exposure at the MG90 event as British Touring Car Championship ace and Fifth Gear host Jason Plato and fellow BTCC driver Sam Tordoff drove it in anger on a number of passenger and display laps.
