Mitsubishi tweaks ASX – again
Added kit is complemented by lower prices, reduced noise levels and improved fuel economyMitsubishi has announced an upgrade for its popular ASX range just two months after the launch of 2.2-litre diesel variants.
The larger-displacement diesel (2.2 versus 1.8) was introduced late in the ASX's 2013 model year, but is now upgraded with the release of 2014 models. According to Mitsubishi's Manager of Corporate Communications, Caitlin Beale, what principally distinguishes the different model years of the diesel ASX is the additional equipment specified as standard for the 2014 model in the Aspire level of trim – a roof rack, the panoramic sunroof (already standard for 4WD cars) and MMCS.
Ms Beale explained to motoring.com.au that the 2013 model year ASX for the local market was "almost" 2014 spec anyway.
In other changes to the broader range, the 2.0-litre petrol engine runs more efficiently, with modification to the induction system and catalytic converter. Coupled to the five-speed manual transmission the petrol variant achieves 7.6L/100km in combined-cycle testing. With the CVT specified the fuel consumption is slightly higher – 7.7L/100km for the 2WD or 7.9 for the 4WD. Peak output is 110kW and 197Nm, and Mitsubishi approve the ASX towing a load weighing up to 1300kg.
The 2.2-litre diesel is unchanged, posting a fuel consumption figure of 5.8L/100km and generating output of 110kW and 360Nm. Towing capacity for the diesel ASX – with standard six-speed automatic – is 1400kg.
From the release of the 2014 model year, all ASX variants come as standard with reversing sensors and reversing camera. Base models display the reversing camera image in a 6.1-inch colour touch screen, while the Aspire variants display to the 7-inch touch screen integrated in the standard Mitsubishi Multi Communication System (MMCS).
At entry-level the ASX moves up from 16-inch to 17-inch alloy wheels and gains a rear spoiler with integrated high-mount stop light. Door handles and mirrors are now 'colour-coded, with the radiator grille finished in chrome. Rear-seat cushioning has been improved for comfort and the audio system is upgraded and features: Bluetooth with audio streaming, USB/iPod connectivity, voice control and MP3 compatibility to go with the radio and CD playback function.
ASX Aspire for 2014 gains the panoramic sunroof and roof rails already mentioned for the diesel variants, as well as front fog lights with chrome bezels, a chrome exhaust tip and privacy glass. Inside, the higher-grade models offer leather upholstery, keyless entry/start, rain-sensing wipers, auto-on/off headlights, an LED ambient lighting strip for the sunroof and heated front seats with electric adjustment for the driver's seat.
Mitsubishi engineers have also reduced noise, vibration and harshness in the cabin, it's claimed, and suspension ride quality is claimed to have been improved. Pricing is unchanged for the diesel variants – and the 1.8-litre diesel and manual Aspire variants are officially dropped from Mitsubishi's price list – but the petrol variants are now priced significantly lower in most cases, with just the ASX Aspire 2WD rising slightly.
