New Cupra SUV previewed

Mild-hybrid and PHEV powertrains to be offered with new Cupra SUV based on Audi Q3 Sportback

Cupra will launch an all-new small SUV in 2024 that features both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the latter offering up to 100km of all-electric driving.

Previewed by a teaser video and a single frontal image, the still-secret SUV can be seen lurking under a translucent sheet with a tri-beam headlight arrangement and, intriguingly, a full-length LED light strip that runs down the centre of the car and links the front and rear bumpers via the roof.

Cupra has confirmed the new model will measure 4.5m long and will be built alongside the Audi Q3 Sportback in Hungary, meaning it will be underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s MQB architecture.

In terms of its appearance, designers say the electrified SUV has been “designed to stand out thanks to its confident look which conveys brave emotion and performance freedom”.

“Cupra’s unstoppable impulse continues as the unconventional challenger brand accelerates its rollout of electrified vehicles with the introduction of an all-new SUV to take on the incredibly competitive compact SUV segment,” the company said.

“The SUV will integrate mHEV and PHEV powertrain technology; the plug-in hybrid variant will benefit from a new-generation PHEV technology, giving it the ability to travel around 100km on all-electric mode.”

Given production isn’t starting until 2024, it’s unlikely we’ll see the new model Down Under before 2025.

Before then, Cupra has prospective Aussie SUV buyers covered with its inbound portfolio featuring the Cupra Ateca small SUV and the Formentor mid-size coupe-crossover.

The Formentor will include a plug-in hybrid powertrain – as will the Cupra Leon hot hatch – while the Cupra Born will be the Spanish performance brand’s first full-electric vehicle.
