Just days after the 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series was revealed, Lexus has all but confirmed its own luxury version of the all-new full-size SUV will be revealed in the coming months.
The new Toyota LandCruiser will be the most advanced ever, but its Lexus cousin will up the ante even further with some serious firepower – if a leaked document revealing the new LX 600 moniker is any guide.
Lexus confirmed the imminent reveal of a second new SUV model during the unveiling of its next-gen NX last weekend, when it showed a large SUV with similar proportions to the new Land Cruiser under a cover.
Now, thanks to a document obtained by Spanish website Cochespias, comes news that there will be LX 570 and LX 600 versions of the new Lexus flagship SUV.
Lexus has already trademarked the LX 600 name but car-makers do this regularly and it doesn’t guarantee a model will come to market with the same name, but the leaked internal document showing not only the LX 600 model name but Sport, F-Sport and VIP variant names adds a little more fuel to the fire.
It’s not clear whether the new Lexus LX 600 will be powered by the Japanese luxury brand’s hotly-anticipated new twin-turbo petrol V8, which is thought to be good for more than 450kW, or whether that engine will be reserved for high-performance F cars only, such as the mooted IS F, LC F and LS F expected to appear later this year.
As we’ve reported, the new Lexus LX is expected to get the high-end twin-turbo V8 at some stage, but whether it wears the LX 600 – or LX F – badge is not yet known.
More likely is that Lexus will launch the LX with the same 305kW/650Nm 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 as seen in the new LandCruiser overseas, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The engine code ‘VJA310R’ listed next to the LX 600 models in the document is not yet connected with any current engine type from Toyota or its Lexus premium brand.
However, given the LS 500 limousine already runs a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 delivering 310kW/600Nm (engine code V35A-FTS), it could be that LX 600 models come with higher-output versions of that engine, as the new Toyota Tundra is likely to do.
There’s also a strong chance the 2022 LandCruiser’s new 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 (227kW/700Nm) could work its way into the next-generation LX, given the two vehicles will again be almost identical under the skin.
Lexus Australia sold the existing LX 570 exclusively with a 5.7-litre petrol V8 for years before the LX 450d became available in 2018 with the 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel V8 from its LandCruiser 200 Series sister model.
So it could be that, even in Australia, the new Lexus LX will become available with not only twin-turbo petrol V6 and V8 engines, but also the LandCruiser’s standard biturbo diesel V6.
What is now abundantly clear, however, is that Lexus has been developing its own super-luxury version of the LandCruiser 300 Series simultaneously with Toyota and it won’t be long before it spills the beans.
