New Lexus LX takes shape

How Lexus’ new luxury liner based on the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series could shape up

As as we await the arrival of the all-new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, the closely related next-generation Lexus LX luxury off-roader is also drawing ever closer.

The 2022 Lexus LX is expected to be revelaed by the end of this year ahead of its global release in 2022, but ahead of its official unveiling the graphic artists at Russian website Kolesa have taken the new LC300’s body and applied some Lexus design elements front and rear.

The result certainly packs a punch, with a stunning new interpretation of Lexus’ typically polarising spindle grille and some familiar lighting elements in the form of slim headlight clusters, arrow-shaped daytime running lights and separate fog light assemblies.

At the rear, a full-width light bar differentiates the next LX from the new LandCruiser, with simple ‘LEXUS’ lettering finishing off its minimalist look.

The Kolesa crew has also revised the lower portion of the rear bumper, with no exhaust tips in sight.

Overseas reports suggest the interior will bring a huge 17-inch touch-screen display and fingerprint scanner to start the engine, but we’re yet to see the evidence.

Either way, the new Lexus LX cabin will be a big step up from the already upmarket new LandCruiser's (pictured below), as will its on-road refinement thanks to the LC300's beefier new ladder frame (also pictured here).

Pricing and local details are still to be confirmed, but given the price hikes coming for the new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, expect to see similar rises for the Lexus LX.

Indeed we're bracing for a starting price of around $150,000.

Powertrains are still the subject of speculation, but a 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 could be offered alongside or instead of the LC300’s 3.3-litre biturbo diesel V6 (227kW/700Nm).

The first Lexus LX hybrid could also eventually make its way Down Under, along with a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8. However, such a Mercedes-AMG GLS 63-rivalling beast isn’t likely from launch.
