New Subaru Impreza just around the corner

Subaru Australia confirms its all-new small car for local release next month, with Impreza RS – but not hybrid – to follow

The new sixth-generation Subaru Impreza will go on sale in Australia in September, ahead of first deliveries by the end of this year.

Speaking with carsales at a recent event celebrating the Japanese brand’s 50-year anniversary Down Under, Subaru Australia general manager Blair Read said the Impreza would look to continue its legacy as an entry model to the Subaru range – while again deferring questions around specifications or pricing until closer to launch.

“Impreza will go on sale in September, with deliveries before the end of the year,” he said. “Pricing and specification is yet to be finalised.”

Read said that while the Japanese domestic market’s Impreza hybrid is off the table for Australia for now, a hotter Impreza RS variant would likely grace local showrooms at a later date, following overseas confirmation the nameplate would return.

“The Japanese domestic market has a hybrid model Impreza, but that’s not on the drawing board for launch. It will be petrol variants,” he said.

“The RS is under review for Australia, but it won’t be there at launch.”

Subaru revealed the new Impreza at the 2022 Los Angeles motor show, where it announced it would drop the sedan but bring back the hotter 2.5-litre RS variant.

The Mk6 Impreza shares its Subaru Global Platform (SGP) with the new Crosstrek small SUV – from which it borrows styling cues such as a hexagonal grille and interlinked headlights, making for a more aggressive look than the outgoing model – but says the underpinnings are now 10 per cent stiffer, enhancing safety and handling.

Subaru Australia previously said the new Impreza would adopt the brand’s latest EyeSight driver assist safety suite, along with a clever climate control system that focuses on warming (or cooling) occupied seats within the cabin, improving comfort and efficiency.
