New Volkswagen Amarok sparks pre-order rush

More than 10,000 expressions of interest lodged for 2023 Volkswagen Amarok dual-cab ute landing now

An unprecedented 10,000 expressions of interest have been lodged for the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok as first examples of the all-new South African-built dual-cab ute land on Aussie shores ahead of an early May launch.

The premium Aventura and PanAmericana model grades and mid-spec Style V6 (which is expected to be the biggest seller) will go on sale here first.

carsales drove all three models at the global launch in South Africa late last year.

The base-model Core and Life will follow about a month later.

“It’s very likely we’ve never seen more initial interest in a new model,” Volkswagen Group Australia spokesperson Daniel DeGasperi told carsales.

The previous Amarok emerged as VW’s most popular in Australia and the new model twinned with the Ford Ranger is expected to be as popular.

“It’s not unexpected,” DeGasperi added. “Amarok has been in the market for 12 years and we have a big pool of buyers who want to upgrade to the new model.

“We’ve got people who want to look at the newest vehicle in the segment, so conquest buyers.

“And also family buyers. We know we had a lot of outflow from people who might have been going from a Tiguan SUV into a dual-cab ute but perhaps didn’t consider the Amarok for one or two reasons.”

One of those reasons was the old Amarok’s lack of airbag protection for rear seat passengers, an equipment shortfall that is addressed with the new model.

The Amarok models landing in Australia now are for training and the media launch, with customer vehicles landing in dealerships by early May.

Volkswagen is confident Amarok won’t suffer the same microchip-driven supply issues as other models in its range.

“The dealers will be well-stocked from day one,” DeGasperi said.

Pricing has already been announced for the new Amarok, starting at $50,990 plus on-road costs for the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel Core and topping out at $79,990 plus ORCs for the Aventura as either a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 or 2.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder.

That pricing place sits above the popular sales leaders in the category, the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.
