Nissan Australia has priced its upcoming 2023 Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER twins from $54,190 and $57,190 plus on-road costs for the Ti and Ti-L grades respectively.
Due on Australian soil in the opening stages of next year, the new electrified all-wheel drive X-TRAILs will sit at the top of the Nissan’s new mid-size SUV model range, in which each carries a $4200 premium over their respective combustion-powered counterparts.
Crucially though, the X-TRAIL e-POWER entry price narrowly undercuts that of the comparable AWD Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which starts at $54,490, is available with seven seats, offers more power and drinks much less fuel (1.8L/100km v 6.1L/100km).
However, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid remains cheaper than both electrified medium SUVs, available in nine variants priced from $36,900 in front-drive guise and $39,900 in AWD form, and also consuming less fuel than the X-TRAIL e-POWER at 4.8L/100km.
Still, Nissan is backing its e-POWER electric-drive technology as the eventual replacement for diesel engines going forward and in this application it employs a 1.5-litre variable-compression turbo-petrol engine to generate power for a 2.1kWh lithium-ion battery, which in turn sustains a pair of electric motors.
It’s these motors – which develop a combined 157kW – that then drive the wheels as opposed to a traditional hybrid in which the motor(s) chip in here and there to support the internal combustion engine.
Standard equipment in e-POWER variants mirrors that of the combustion-powered X-TRAIL Ti and Ti-L grades, meaning highlights on the more affordable version include leather-accented upholstery, a 12.3-inch infotainment system with sat-nav and smartphone mirroring, a 12.3-inch digital cockpit complemented by a 10.8-inch head-up display, tri-zone climate control, powered tailgate, wireless smartphone charging and a panoramic roof.
The Ti flagship, meanwhile, ups the ante with a heated steering wheel, 10-speaker Bose sound system, Nappa leather upholstery, memory seat function, rear sunshades, hands-free rear tailgate, heated rear outboard seats and remote engine start.
Nissan Australia managing director Adam Paterson says he can’t wait for Aussie families to get behind the wheel and experience the new X-TRAIL e-POWER for themselves.
“With the X-Trail Ti and Ti-L e-POWER with e-4ORCE models, luxury and efficiency arrive hand in hand, combining the best design, safety, comfort and convenience features with “Nissan’s advanced electrification technology to deliver an EV-like drive experience and incredible efficiency,” he said.
“It’s the kind of technology you need to experience to believe.”
carsales understands demand for the e-POWER twins is already looking healthy, with several hundred pre-orders already placed despite the premium positioning and more expected in the coming weeks.
