Nissan X-TRAIL gains new diesel powerplant
Larger engine introduced with facelifted model for improved diesel share of sales volumeNissan is committed to increasing sales of its diesel-engined X-TRAIL SUV from its current "single-digit" figures to the "segment average" of about 15 per cent, says Ben Warren, Nissan Australia's Senior Marketing Manager for SUVs.
During a media presentation last week for the facelifted T32 generation of X-TRAIL, Warren stated that "95 per cent of... diesel sales [were] the four-wheel drive automatic, which we didn't have previously.
"So we actually [now] have a car that competes in the heartland of the diesel segment."
Until the facelifted model's arrival, the X-TRAIL had been limited to a 1.6-litre diesel and manual transmission only. The new model ditches the front-wheel drive diesel variants and migrates to a 2.0-litre engine with standard Xtronic (continuously variable) transmission in part-time four-wheel drive configuration.
Peak power and torque figures for the new engine are 130kW and 380Nm, with fuel consumption officially 6.0L/100km for the X-TRAIL TS or 6.1 for the X-TRAIL TL.
Nissan has released the revised X-TRAIL at prices that are either unchanged or actually reduced – in the case of the petrol 4WD models, which are $900 lower for the ST-L and Ti grades, and $1490 cheaper for the entry-level ST variant.
In addition to the new diesel powerplant and revised cosmetics, the X-TRAIL rides on new 17-inch (ST, TS, ST-L) and 19-inch (Ti/TL) alloy wheels. Inside there's a new design of steering wheel with a flat-bottom rim, a new shift lever knob with leather boot and a new centre console and lid.
Added equipment for the high-spec Ti and TL variants comprises motion-activated tailgate, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and high-beam assist.
Driver-assist and active safety technology are the main focus of Nissan's work on the X-TRAIL update. All variants now come with autonomous emergency braking and forward collision warning. The AEB system embraces pedestrian detection for the flagship Ti (petrol) and TL (diesel) grades. And both those X-TRAIL variants also gain adaptive headlights.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert is now standard for all grades other than the entry-level ST models, and all bar the base model now come with moving object detection for the Around View Monitor. Adaptive cruise control and intelligent lane intervention are exclusively standard for the X-TrRAIL Ti.
There are also some lesser changes across the range, including: infotainment graphics, steering wheel controls, control for the heated/cooled cupholders, keyless-entry door button and front vents.
Three new colours for the X-TRAIL range are Ruby Red, Marine Blue and Copper Blaze, with Gun Metallic, Diamond Black, Brilliant Silver and Ivory Pearl carried over.
In addition to the new features already mentioned, the standard equipment for the X-TRAIL ST and TS is as follows: 17-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, idle-stop (Diesel only), fold-in electrically-adjustable mirrors, rear roof spoiler, reversing camera, electric park brake (manual transmission only), keyless entry/start, 5.0-inch infotainment screen, CD audio with USB/Aux ports plus Bluetooth, 40:20:40 split-fold/sliding/reclining seats in the rear, flexible storage system in boot, cruise control and six airbags.
Over and above the ST specification, the X-TRAIL ST-L is equipped with rear privacy glass, front fog lamps, partial leather upholstery for steering wheel/seats, six-way electrically-adjustable front seats (six-way for driver, four-way for passenger), lumbar support (driver only), roof rails (100kg load capacity), heated front seats, dual zone climate control, 7.0-inch infotainment screen, digital radio DAB+, satellite-navigation with traffic monitoring, and Around-View Monitor.
The range-topping X-TRAIL Ti and TL models additionally feature the following standard kit: heated door mirrors, electrochromatic rear-view mirror, LED headlights, auto-levelling headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power tilt and slide sunroof and lane departure warning.
