Nissan X-TRAIL hybrid to fight Toyota RAV4
New Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER revealed in Japan with AWD and three-row options ahead of Aussie launchThe new-generation 2022 Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER made its debut in Japan today and will take the fight up to the top-selling Toyota RAV4 Hybrid when it launches in Australia.
Nissan Australia has confirmed that the electrified e-POWER version of the new-generation Nissan X-TRAIL will follow regular models that are set to arrive here around October.
We’re expecting a launch early next year.
Essentially a bigger and more powerful version of the incoming Nissan QASHQAI e-POWER, the X-TRAIL hybrid uses a 106kW/250Nm variable-compression petrol engine that acts a generator for its on-board lithium-ion battery.
The battery, in turn, powers a single electric motor in front-wheel drive guise, while an optional four-wheel drive ‘e-4ORCE’ variant gains an extra motor on the rear axle.
Nissan says the e-4ORCE system allows the X-TRAIL to operate as a front-wheel drive vehicle when cruising or driving in a straight line but then switches to all-wheel drive by engaging the rear motor when entering a corner.
The process is said to save energy and boost grip at the same time, with the primary drive (front) motor churning out a healthy 150kW/330Nm.
The rear motor develops 100kW/195Nm.
Just like a plug-in hybrid or battery-electric vehicle, the X-TRAIL e-POWER offers regenerative braking to help keep emissions down and provide drivers with a distinctly EV-like ‘e-Pedal’ drive experience.
Local pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to launch, however the e-POWER will be offered in both two- and three-row configurations in Japan – just like the related Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Australia.
That provides a distinct point of difference to the RAV4, which does not have a seven-seat option.
“As announced in Nissan Ambition 2030, Nissan aims to drive towards a cleaner, safer and more inclusive world through our products and services,” said Nissan chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta.
“With this in mind, we are electrifying major models, with the X-TRAIL for the Japan market becoming a dedicated e-POWER model with e-4ORCE an option.
“The new X-Trail will play an important role in leading our electrification.”
