Sources within Audi have confirmed its upcoming A2 model, due to be launched in 2012, will be offered without a conventional combustion engine, a decision that will see the electric-only model pitched directly against the BMW Megacity.
Ditching the original A2's expensive all-aluminium spaceframe construction, the new model will utilise a cheaper, conventional steel monocoque body sourced from its A1 sibling (pictured) -- a move that could finally see the model become viable for sale Down Under.
The new A2 will most likely be penned by young German designer Chris Winkelmann, the man responsible for such stylish creations as the Q5 SUV and A8 flagship saloon, and although the final design is still under wraps, Audi has hinted the car will follow many of the same styling cues found in its tall, one-box predecessor.
Motor specifications, equipment levels and pricing will be announced closer to the A2's official launch, currently estimated to be early 2012.
