Nissan has confirmed speculation that it would undercut its own sedan models with the release of sharp pricing on its Pulsar hatch range.
The new five-door Pulsar line-up goes on sale next month (June) with the entry-level manual ST priced from $18,990. The corresponding entry-level four-door Pulsar ST sedan is priced from $19,990.
Nissan estimates the sub-$19K hatch pricing will translate to a drive-away price of around $21,880. CVT auto adds $2250 to the ST (recommended retail $21,240).
ST-L and ST-S variants will also be offered. The full atmo Pulsar hatch range model walk is detailed below.
Enthusiast will be keen to see pricing announced for the SSS Pulsar hatch. Featuring a turbocharged, direct-injected 1.6-litre petrol engine, the five-door that resurrects the revered SSS badge will go on sale at $29,240. A CVT auto is also offered on the SSS, priced at $2500.
The SSS will lend its 140kW turbo four to the ST-S variant as well. The ST and ST-L hatches are powered by a 96kW naturally-aspirated 1.8-litre petrol four.
No diesel or hybrid models are offered or mooted.
Nissan Australia boss, Bill Peffer Jr, called the Pulsar hatch release: "The next exciting instalment in our [Nissan's] busy product schedule this year."
"We are confident Australian small car buyers will find the all-new Pulsar Hatch to be exceptional value. Each grade in the Pulsar Hatch model range has a compelling mix of price and standard equipment.”
Pulsar returned to the local marketplace in January 2013. The nameplate replaced the largely unsuccessful Tiida.
A key part of Nissan's strategy with the return of the model has been specification levels. In contrast to some other models in the segment, Nissan has not 'chased' high-grade dynamics -- rather it has sought to champion the Pulsar's refinement. The hatch, and especially the SSS, is expected to be dynamically improved compared to the 'soft-focussed' four-door.
Pulsar's hatch range will kick off with the ST. Standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, aircon, cruise control, Bluetooth phone prep, power windows, and remote keyless entry.
The mid-grade ST-L adds USB/iPod connectivity iPhone, front fog lights, rear spoiler and other trim and equipment upgrades. A performance version dubbed ST-S adds the turbo 1.6-litre engine and 17-inch alloys.
At the top of the Pulsar hatch family tree sits the new SSS. This boosts the ST-S's equipment list with xenon headlamps, bodykit, satnav with 5.8-inch colour screen, rear camera, dual-zone climate and part-leather trim.
