RAM 1500 EV to get range-extender option

Plug-in hybrid version of first electric RAM ute will boost range to help with towing and off-roading

The all-electric RAM 1500 BEV pick-up will arrive with the handy option of a range-extender when it finally touches down in 2024, the truck-maker's boss has revealed.

According to RAM CEO Mike Koval Jr, the so-called Range Electric Paradigm Breaker (REPB) range-extender powertrain is being developed as a direct consequence of concerns from customers.

It's thought the addition of a combustion engine to charge the on-board batteries will have no physical connection to the wheels and could slot into a space within the rear bed.

One of the biggest challenges for large, heavy battery-electric pick-up trucks is the adverse effects of towing on its range between top-ups.

Driving off-road in remote areas with little or no charging infrastructure is also a concern among those who will buy the 2024 RAM 1500 BEV for leisure or work.

Created to battle it out with the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Ford F-150 Lightning, the US truck-maker has already previewed an early design sketch of how it might take shape and released an image of its all-new STLA Frame platform that will underpin it.

Full details remain thin on the ground, but the STLA ladder-frame chassis is claimed to be capable of packaging a huge 200kWh battery that will provide a range of up to 800km.

A smaller 159kWh lithium-ion battery pack will also be available.

RAM is also set to offer electric motors that vary in power from 150kW to 330kW, with the most powerful dual-motor 1500 BEV to get around 660kW.

The US brand has also launched RamRevolution.com – a new website that keeps fans updated on the battery-powered pick-up's development and asks for feedback.

RAM says it's so keen to get customer feedback it will create several events later this year to meet its customers.

Stay tuned as yet more teasers are expected ahead of the RAM 1500 BEV's reveal.
