Recall wrap: 15,300 Mercedes-Benz SUVs recalled

Vehicle jack may not meet local safety standards as Toyota recalls a batch of MY20 Yaris Hybrid cars

Mercedes-Benz Australia has recalled a combined 15,323 vehicles across its Mercedes-Benz GLE, GLS and EQC model lines to rectify a potentially lethal issue with the vehicles’ jack.

According to the official recall notice, the jack may not meet the requirements of the Australian Consumer Product Safety Standard and could fail or become unstable while supporting the vehicles, all of which weigh more than 2200kg.

This obviously poses risks of serious injury or even death to anyone underneath or near the vehicle if a jack failure occurs.

“Owners of affected vehicles can contact their most convenient Mercedes-Benz retailer for inspection and replacement of the vehicle jack if required, as soon as possible,” a brand spokesperson said in a statement.

Toyota Australia has also issued a recall for 298 examples of the MY20 Toyota Yaris Hybrid (Ascent Sport, SX and ZR grades) to amend a software error that could force the electrified runabout into limp mode.

The brand says “the hybrid system may fail to engage the limp mode safety feature” during sudden acceleration, which could result in a “sudden loss of motive power” and the illumination of multiple warning lights on the dash.

“A loss of motive power while driving increases the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users,” the recall notice reads.

Affected customers will be contacted in writing and are encouraged to make an appointment with their preferred Toyota dealer for a free software upgrade.
