In among the splendours of a glorious past, Mercedes-Benz will showcase the latest creation, the SLR McLaren Roadster at the 'Festival of Speed' at Goodwood this weekend.
The 'Festival of Speed' is an annual celebration of speed and the motor car. It attracts large numbers of spectators from all over the world. Vehicles on display can include the latest exotica (as in the case of the SLR) or historic vehicles of some note.
The weekend includes a series of timed driving tests and the vehicles competing are placed in various classes according to age and type.
For this event, the SLR (more here) will compete in the 'Supercar Runs' on Friday and the weekend. It will also be on display at the Mercedes-Benz stand, which houses a selection of AMG models from the past forty years.
Other historic Benz models there will include a W125 Silver Arrow GP racer from 1937 and Juan-Manuel Fangio's 300 SLR, in which the Argentine driver won the 1955 Mille Miglia with journalist Dennis Jenkinson co-driving.
As for the coupe, the SLR Roadster is built by McLaren at Woking in England and boasts a carbon-fibre body and a supercharged AMG V8 which develops 460kW of power and 780Nm of torque. Top speed is claimed to be 332km/h. Driving through a five-speed automatic transmission, the SLR Roadster can reach 100km/h in 3.8 secs.
Low volume production will commence from September 2007.
