Two of 2018’s most highly anticipated coupes from BMW and Toyota have been spied testing.
BMW is set to revive the 8 Series moniker with its new flagship coupe, and spy pics reveal it will be vast.
Based on the 7 Series platform, the 8 Series will be aimed squarely at taking on stiff competition from Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class Coupe and Bentley’s Continental GT. As the 8 Series will be so closely linked to its four door brother, expect the running gear to be very similar.
The 8 Series Coupe will replace the 6 Series when production begins late next year 2018.
Meanwhile, Toyota’s new iteration of its cult classic, the Supra, has also been spotted testing.
The new Supra will be Toyota's first hybrid sports car and is being jointly developed by BMW, which will share the same basic architecture of the Supra to create its Z4 replacement, likely dubbed the Z5.
Although hidden under camouflage, the Supra does appear to take some styling cues from Toyota’s radical supercar concept, the FT-1.
However, the overall appearance does seem to have been toned down quite significantly, which most likely suggests Toyota is placing the coupe firmly in the sports car market and not in the rarefied supercar class.
There is no word yet as to what powertrain will be used in the Supra, however, there are rumours the coupe could use a BMW derived in-line six-cylinder engine, in conjunction with a hybrid power delivery system which will draw on technology used in Toyota’s Le Mans hybrid prototype race car.
