The spy photos shown here are thought to depict the next generation of Chrysler's 1500 series RAM pick-up truck, complete with a mammoth wheelbase and massive dual-cab interior.
As well as being more commodious for passengers and more load-friendly, the new series RAM is said to be in line for interior upgrades.
These should include the latest Chrysler Uconnect systems as well as some of the in-cabin gadgets (but maybe not the inbuilt vacuum cleaner) and telematics previewed in the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica people-mover. A new flat-folding system for the crew cab seats is also being rumoured.
As far as the load area is concerned, the expected capacity increase could also be accompanied by an innovative split tailgate to help make loading easier.
Chrysler is also expected to put the RAM on a weight-reduction diet via strategic use of aluminium, as well as paying some extra attention to aerodynamics by reducing, for example, the size of the grille
Upgrades are expected for Pentastar petrol engines – including the adoption of direct fuel injection – as well as the diesel, and the bulk of transmissions are expected to be eight-speed, with six-speeders limited to entry-level variants. There are also reports Chrysler will adopt a starter-generator stop-start system.
The new RAM is expected to go on sale in the US early in 2018. In Australia, the current models are converted to right-hand drive, and the new model is expected to follow that precedent.
