SPY PICS: Mercedes-Benz GLK

Benz's X3 rival is not coming to Australia

The sound of gentle sobbing from the direction of Mulgrave is Mercedes-Benz product planners lamenting the new GLK SUV, which will not make it to Australia.

These pics of a GLK undergoing testing in America are courtesy of our spy photography specialists at Carparazzi, who advise that the GLK will ride on the same structure as the new C-Class with 4Matic all-wheel drive -- and that platform has not been engineered for right-hand drive markets.

A 3.5-litre V6 is likely to be the standard engine for the GLK on debut and the transmission will be the seven-speed '7G-Tronic' sequential-shift auto, but a heavy-hitting version with AMG's 6.2-litre V8 will likely go on sale in the indeterminate future.

Benz in Australia has no answer to the X3, which will shortly spawn another variant (more here). The international launch of the GLK is a chance for the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
