SPY PICS: Mercedes continues Gullwing tease

Benz 'accidently' parks camouflaged prototypes in front of journalists

It was either incredibly stupid or cunningly clever... and our money is on the latter. Mercedes-Benz engineers are busily putting the finishing touches to the soon-to-be-released SLS AMG, affectionately known as the Gullwing. And it just so happens that three lightly camouflaged prototypes were parked in front of a Californian hotel full of the motoring press in town for another event.

Two convertible versions of the forthcoming supercar, as well as a hardtop, were plonked in front of the Monterey hotel in a thinly veiled publicity stunt. The Mercedes engineers were parked just long enough to let photographers, including our friends at Carparazzi, snap the three cars from all angles.

With the SLR McLaren replacement due for an official unveiling at September's Frankfurt Motor Show the disguises are starting too thin on the test mules. More details are on show around the lights, grille and air intakes to give a further taste of what to expect when this striptease is complete.

It is looking increasingly likely that the German firm will offer a traditional folding soft-top for the convertible version, which will sport traditional front-hinged doors.

And these shots aren't the only time the Carparazzi snappers have come across this fleet. Only two days prior to the hotel stop the trio were spied in the Nevada desert undergoing hot weather testing.

All off this brings us to one conclusion; bring on Frankfurt and the proper reveal!
