But following a massive change of tack from Benz, the conventional M-Class is now to be named GLE from a mid-life refresh next year. The replacement for the smaller GLK, which is on the way to Australia finally, will be sold here badged GLC instead, in tribute to the C-Class platform underpinning it. And the X6 competitor Benz has been preparing for some time will now be named 'GLE Coupe'... not MLC after all. As these spy pictures reveal, the GLE Coupe will feature the current Benz corporate look, with retro swage lines along the flanks and the low roof over the rear doors accentuated by the shallow, sweeping D pillars. These tell-tales, which draw parallels with the CLA sedan and A-Class hatch would be enough to tell you this is a Benz SUV, but there's also the prominent Benz grille with three-pointed star badge at the centre and the distinctive daytime running lights – all clearly visible through the white material draped over the nose.
When the GLE Coupe goes on sale, it will be topped by an AMG version, as we've previously reported, and there'll be a plethora of more pedestrian models – all of which will be built on the same Tuscaloosa (Alabama) production line where Benz also builds the current M-Class range.
