SPY PICS: Next Sports Coupe to remain W203-based

Benz is ditching the 'Sport Coupe' tag for 'CLC'

Mercedes-Benz codes are part family tree, part soap opera. Reading about the upcoming 'CLC' has led to much head-scratching at The Carsales Network.

Is it a new CL coupe with the extra 'C' to distinguish it from a CLR open-top model? Is it a two-door version of the CLS?

No, it's the next C-Class Sport Coupe liftback. That makes it the Benz equivalent to the new teen idol in Ramsay Street, except -- in the best traditions of TV soaps -- this one has a secret.

It's not as new as you think... According to those master spy photographers and avid watchers of TV serials at Carparazzi, the vehicle pictured here is the next Mercedes Sport Coupe, the car that is a three-door hatch based on the C-Class platform.

Regular readers will recall that the Sport Coupe has not been updated with the rest of the C-Class range in the migration from 203 series to 204 series.

What's more, (cue the dramatic musical sting), the new Sport Coupe will remain on the 203 Series platform, but with styling updates to parallel the new 204 Series C-Class sedans and wagons.

And just for that little extra mystery, the company is dropping the 'Sport Coupe' name in favour of the 'CLC' code.
