It’s a battle for the ages: Porsche’s iconic 911 taking on AMG’s latest and potentially greatest sports car, the SLC.
We’re already drooling at the prospect and it’s still roughly two years before Benz’s performance hot-house releases its latest V8 coupe onto the streets.
Codenamed C190 and dubbed SLC (although there is speculation it could also be called GT in production), it is based on a chopped version of the SLS’ aluminium spaceframe chassis.
Power will come from a brand new 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 sitting mid-forward driving the rear wheels.
The 360kW donk (and that’s just for starters before power up kits, Black Series etc appear) will also see service in the AMG C63 replacement – and much more besides no doubt).
Housed in a long-bonneted, short arsed body evocative of the SLS, the SLC will abandon big bro’s gullwing doors as well as a decent amount of pork as it strives to diet to within coo-ee of the 911’s 1400kg (approx) minimum kerb weight.
While the SLC’s drivetrain layout has more in common with the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and new Jaguar F-Type S, there’s no doubt the iconic 911 is the car the new AMG has in its sights.
It’s a battle we fancy the rear-engined boxer six-cylinder Porsche will be up for. After all, it’s seen off a few other challenges in its 50-year history!
At one stage the common chat was that it would be retired. But now the smart money appears to be on some mild upgrades followed by a complete overhaul in the second half of the decade.
“I can’t imagine that AMG wouldn’t replace it,” was how our in-the-know snout put it.
