Tesla Cybertruck orders halted in Australia

Tesla Australia quietly removes the order tab from its local site, refunds TBC

One of the most hyped and eagerly awaited models of all time – the 2023 Tesla Cybertruck – may no longer be joining the list of battery-electric pick-up trucks headed to Australia.

Tesla Australia has officially stopped taking reservations for the futuristic but repeatedly delayed electric ute, as have most major markets outside of North America.

The Aussie Tesla site was updated overnight and now shows a ‘Get Updates’ tab instead of an order or deposit window for its most sought-after vehicle.

Tesla has a policy of not responding to media questions but various reports from around the web have cited an overflowing order bank as one of the potential reasons for the Cybertruck’s withdrawal from pre-sales in all but the US, Canadian and Mexican markets.

For reference, Tesla reportedly has more than 1.3 million pre-orders for the Cybertruck and CEO Elon Musk has confirmed it’s sold out until at least 2027… if the current production timeline stays on track.

If it suffers more setbacks then the wait time could easily close in on 2030.

Rumours and concerns have been circulating for years now that the Cybertruck might be just too big and outlandish for Australia and its stringent ADR regulations, neither of which are a problem in the bigger-is-better loving US market.

It’s unclear for the time being whether Aussie punters who paid a $150 “refundable” deposit will indeed be refunded or if it will be rolled over to a rumoured smaller Cybertruck also said to be in development and slated for production.

If such a vehicle is in the pipeline it could explain why the original (and massive) Cybertuck is being pulled from most global markets; Australians and Europeans have a preference for smaller ‘mid-size’ utes like the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Volkswagen Amarok and Isuzu D-MAX.

The shrunken Cybertruck is said to be 15-20 per cent smaller than the original – which would put it roughly on par with the aforementioned diesel dual-cabs.
