Toyota has teased a pair of electric concept vehicles ahead of their public debut at the Japan Mobility Show next week, one of which looks an awful lot like an electric GR Supra sports car.
The very orange coupe has thus far been teased only by a couple of close-up preview images showing off its angry rear-end, classic cab-back silhouette, multi-layered dash and rectangular GR-branded steering yoke.
Officially dubbed the Toyota FT-Se, the electric sports car concept alternative has been described by its creators as a motorsport-derived “high-performance sports BEV model” destined to “further handling stability and aerodynamic performance” with its “wide and low proportions”.
We don’t have any concrete details on the vehicle just yet, save for what we can see in the teaser images, but the FT-Se’s relationship or connection with the existing combustion-powered Supra is clear for all to see.
However it will likely better the current Supra’s force-fed six-cylinder in terms of outright power and performance.
Meantime inside the cabin, we can see what Toyota describes as a next-generation cockpit offering “intuitive controls and a more immersive driving experience” thanks to its low instrument panel and innovative steering yolk.
“Toyota set out to create a car that continues to grow with the driver through software updates,” the brand said in a statement, indicating that over-the-air (OTA) performance updates and/or features would be made available over time (if the concept becomes reality).
This of course isn’t the first time we’ve seen an electric performance car concept from Toyota, but it is the first time we’ve seen one with such close (visual) ties to an established model, with the teasers coming less than a year after reports of an electric Supra being ready by 2025 surfaced in Japan.
The other concept being shown in Tokyo is called the FT-3e and it looks to be a potential rival for established electric crossovers like the Kia EV6, Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E with its elevated ride height and fastback design.
Sharing the bulk of its hypothetical components with the FT-Se, the Toyota FT-3e concept will apparently be headlined by its tech-heavy interior and its ability to “enrich customers’ daily lives with new driving experiences and personalised services”.
“Digital displays running from the lower side body to the upper door provide information, including battery charge, onboard temperature, and interior air quality when the driver approaches the car,” Toyota said.
“Toyota believes that future mobility will go beyond providing physical transportation tools to becoming a lifestyle partner closely aligned with each customer’s individual values.
“Alongside the highly responsive controls and captivating designs unique to BEVs, these models evolve into one-of-a-kind cherished vehicles by offering the joy of personal ride customisation, as well as convenient functions for stress-free browsing of local area information while onboard.”
Formerly known as the Tokyo motor show, the 2023 Japan Mobility Show will open on October 26 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre.
