Toyota has finally confirmed that it will produce a Toyota GR Supra with a manual transmission following years of rumour and speculation.
The Japanese car-maker posted an image of the three-pedal set-up alongside the news in both Australia and the US, saying: "You’ve spoken… And we’ve listened! An all-new Toyota GR Supra Manual Transmission is coming".
Toyota Australia confirmed the GR Supra coupe "will soon be offered in Australia with a newly developed manual transmission, designed to offer a unique dynamic experience while meeting the demand of driving purists.
"The manual transmission will enhance the Supra's signature racing DNA with a pure and unique driving experience. Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) took on feedback from customers and fans alike in developing the manual transmission."
Toyota says it will announce further details in coming weeks but, according to leaks out of Japan, production of the three-pedal Supra will start as soon as this July, hinting the six-speed manual Toyota coupe could be on sale before the end of this year, with an October launch already suggested.
Thought to have been created in response to the upcoming Nissan Z, the DIY shifter is rumoured to be only offered with six-cylinder Supras, the only powertrain available in Australia.
If so, the new manual 'box will be combined with the BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine that currently produces 285kW of power and 498Nm of torque – although the latter might exceed the manual's torque limit and could be wound back to around 450Nm.
Helping differentiate it from the rest of the GR Supra range, the manual version could also bring a new chassis tune tailored for hard-core enthusiasts, and a second teaser image also reveals it will get red 'Supra' badging at the rear.
Stay tuned as Toyota is expected to release another teaser on April 28, as part of the build-up to the reveal of its first manual GR Supra.
