Toyota is set to turn up the wick on the new Supra – in a big way.
According to Japan’s Best Car magazine, Toyota is preparing a new GRMN (Gazoo Racing Meisters of Nurburgring) Supra that will pack close to 300kW of power from a familiar 3.0-litre turbo-six, a 50kW increase on the donor model.
The newcomer could be revealed as early as this year, boasting additional body reinforcements for more torsional stiffness, and upgraded suspension to boot, the outlet suggests.
Early rumours suggested Toyota was preparing to wedge the new S58 twin-turbocharged BMW-sourced engine from the new M3 into the GRMN Supra’s engine bay, which would have opened the door to circa 375kW/600Nm power outputs.
But the Best Car article suggests more power from the donor model’s current straight-six instead, and if aftermarket tuners are any guide, then Toyota should have no problem increasing the Supra's outputs.
Litchfield in the UK has already developed an ECU tune that increases power to 313kW. Even Toyota’s own Supra GT4 race car is good for 320kW using the same 3.0-litre turbo-six.
Either way, expect the GRMN Supra to cut a few kilos compared with the donor car (pictured). Speaking with carsales.com.au, Toyota engineers recently unveiled a similar blueprint for the smaller GRMN Yaris that is also under development.
Rumours have circulated since the new Supra's introduction about what Toyota might do to develop a more powerful model. Toyota’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, has already hinted that new variants will be continually rolled out across the Supra’s life cycle.
