Toyota has confirmed its new Supra sports car will be priced at $49,990 in the US – prompting speculation the newcomer could start at under $80,000 in Australia.
The fifth-generation A90 Toyota Supra will be available in two grades in America: 3.0 and 3.0 Premium. Initially, it will also be offered in a Launch Edition.
Australia is expected to adopt the same two-plus-one strategy – all three variants fitted with the same 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six offering 250kW and 500Nm.
With a straight-forward currency conversion, America’s 3.0 Supra would start from $A71,525 (plus on-road costs) in Oz.
Unfortunately, the pricing equation isn’t that simple: different taxes (including Luxury Car Tax) and levies, shipping, complex currency fluctuations, equipment disparities and of course Toyota Australia’s healthy margin will likely push the entry price to between $80,000 and $90,000.
That would leave the 3.0 Premium to chime in at about $100,000, give or take.
Toyota has been extremely coy on the finer details of the Supra, which is expected to arrive in Australia in September and will be limited to 300 vehicles initially.
At this stage, the only rough gauge for pricing has been its donor vehicle, the BMW Z4, which is priced at $124,900 in equivalent turbo-six trim.
Like the US, Toyota Australia has effectively ruled out the four-cylinder Supra that surfaced back in January.
Instead, it is expected the 3.0 and 3.0 Premium will be separated by technology and equipment differences.
In America, the 3.0 gets a 6.5-inch media touchscreen, Alcantara seats, whereas the 3.0 Premium scores an uprated 8.8-inch touchscreen, heated leather seats with seat warmers, an uprated 12-speaker JBL stereo, wireless phone charging and head-up display.
Australian cars are expected to feature keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear view mirror, reversing camera and parking sensors as standard. Safety equipment will comprise forward collision warning, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist and automatic high beams.
The Supra’s paint palette will include Renaissance Red 2.0, Nitro Yellow, Downshift Blue, Phantom Matte Grey, Absolute Zero White, Tungsten Silver, Turbulence Grey and Nocturnal Black, going off US specifications.
