John and Helen Taylor have just completed a near 15,000km trip around the country to set two new fuel economy records.
The couple drove a recently launched Peugeot 308 XS HDi which returned a fuel consumption figure of 3.13L/100km and emitted just 90.3g/km of CO2.
For their efforts -- and subject to confirmation by the publishers -- the Taylors have been rewarded with two new entries in the Guinness Book of World Records. Their records will be listed in the publication as 'Round Australia Diesel Economy World Record' and 'Round Australia World Fuel Economy Record'.
John Taylor was actually the previous record-holder, driving a Peugeot 307 that achieved a low of 3.49L/100km, back in 2004. Four years later, he and Helen have successfully repeated the record attempt. In this latest trip, the couple left Melbourne and worked their way around the coastline, mixing it with storms in the top end and a cyclone in Western Australia -- weather that isn't particularly conducive to frugal driving.
On the 60-litre tank, the 308 travelled an average in excess of 1900km between stops.
The Taylors say that the 308 underwent no special preparation and was loaded down with two large suitcases for the 25-day trip.
A former Detective Inspector with the Victoria Police, Philip Swindells, acted as scrutineer for Guinness and ensured that the brewer's requirements were met for the records to be legitimate.
"One of the most pleasing aspects of this fantastic result with the Peugeot 308 was the fact that we achieved it in a 'real world' situation," said Rob Dommerson, Peugeot Automobiles Australia's Managing Director.
"They drove via the normal highways that people would use when heading around the country, in a fashion that most Australians would be completely familiar with when they take their annual holidays. Too often, long distance driving attempts are made on closed test tracks, or in the empty country side along vast stretches of long straight roads."
The total cost of diesel for the run was $703.93 and 453.94 litres of fuel were consumed over the 25 days.
